Vicky Allsopp's memories

Created by Catherine one year ago
Martin was a wonderful friend and colleague. He was very popular with the staff  at Middlesex and the students! Thinking back over fifty years, I know that Martin was a most kindly, generous and helpful person.

Indeed, Martin was a great academic and teacher. We used to talk, amongst other things, of books, publishers - even finance. When Martin turned his mind to teaching this ‘alien’ subject with me, despite all his self-deprecating comments, he quickly mastered it.

Perhaps one of Martin’s most endearing qualities was his sense of humour and facility with language. He knew well how to call a spade a spade - but often with additional amusing tweaks! It was lovely to discuss politics with him and I would be left chuckling at one of his funny but apposite comments.

Martin was such a great family man. He was so proud of you all and we used to swap news about our families. He was very kind and supportive to my son, Huw, when he worked at Middlesex and afterwards.

It was so lovely to have a picture of Martin with his first grandson. I do hope that new members of your family will be able to know in the future how much Martin was appreciated and respected by those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

I shall remember him with fondness.
